Cornhole is a game whose origins are shrouded in mystery. Some claim that the game was invented in Germany in the 14th century, while others insist that it was more likely to have originated in Cincinnati. What is known about the game is that it is widely popular nationwide, and is played in many venues. Some of the more popular settings for a game of cornhole are tailgate parties, house parties, bars, and more recently, the beach.
There is not much equipment used in play. There are 2 platforms, 2 foot wide by 4 feet long. A 6 inch hole is cut, centered, 9 inches below the top of the platform. This end of the platform is raised 12 inches, leaving the board angled down. Regulations call for 27 feet between the bottom of both platforms, but you can change this to suit your surroundings. The only other equipment are 8 bags, 4 for each team. These bags should be a 6 inch by 6 inch square, and filled with corn to a weight of one pound (16 ounces).
Standing on either side of the platform, each player “pitches” his 4 bags, with the goal being to get them in the hole, earning 3 points. It matters none how the bag goes through the hole, a direct shot, sliding in, or being pushed by another bag. All of these instances will result in 3 points gained for that team. The other way to score is by landing a bag on the board, and having it there when all of the bags have been pitched. The first player or team over 21 points wins.
Cornhole is a perfect beach game, as the rules are simple, and very flexible, and the scoring is easy. Another great thing: No shirts and shoes required. Due to the popularity of the game, many companies rent and deliver equipment to the beach for vacationers. So, next time you’re at the beach, get a tan, have a beverage, and settle in for a friendly game! If you have any fun variations on the rules, feel free to share them.
